Whether you’re a senior citizen trying to get into shape or an older adult that needs a class to stay in good physical condition, the MacColl YMCA has programs to assist you with achieving your goals.
One of those programs is Slow Flow Yoga, which is taught at a slower pace to help students find beneficial alignment and nourishment in each pose. The sessions will offer challenges for those seeking to deepen their yoga practice and modifications for people working with injuries and other limitations. Participants need to bring their own Pilates/yoga mat.
Another program is Prescribe the Y: Fit for Life, which is a chronic disease prevention program. The 12-week, twice a week exercise program is geared toward adults at a high risk for developing heart and/or metabolic diseases. The program is based on the concept that physical fitness is a form of preventative treatment that can foster a lifetime of health and well-being. Participants are given the tools necessary to change harmful behaviors and lead an active and healthy lifestyle. To enroll, people must be overweight with a body mass index greater than 25 and score moderate to high on a risk factor analysis. Such factors could include an elevated cholesterol level, a family history of certain diseases and high blood pressure. Interested parties should contact Health and Wellness Director Shana McElroy.
Hatha flow yoga is a traditional program for the beginner to the expert. It is designed to increase strength, balance, flexibility and confidence while encouraging relaxation.
Use your own body weight, weights, and stability balls, to gain strength, stabilize joints, increase flexibility, add balance, and relieve pain to increase mobility for daily life.
Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. No experience
is necessary - bring your willingness to have fun and we will learn all the rules together.
In addition, senior citizens can dive into one of the adult aquatic programs conducted in the MacColl YMCA’s new spacious pool. The low-impact programs include Water Aerobics, Aqua-Fit, Rest and Rejuvenation, Strength & Stretching and Water Walking.
